Nearly 90% of union pipeline welders nationwide are from local 798; claim 3,400 skilled welders, 650 journeymen Spacers, and 4,200 helpers. Conventional wisdom is that 400 welders plus associated helpers work regularly and routinely in pipeline work year in and year out. 101
